Assessing the Plight of West Papuan Refugees: ICJ(AS) Delegation’s Eye-Opening Visit to PNG in 2003

In January 2003 a delegation of ICJ(AS) members, together with Margaret Piper of the Refugee Council of Australia, travelled to PNG to assess the situation of refugees from West Papua living in that country. At that time PNG was not a party to the Refugee Convention.

The delegation travelled to a camp on the West Papuan border and to another camp in Timika in the north. The delegation also had discussions with the PNG government and the representative of the HCR in Port Moresby.
